As Mexico's most modern Caribbean resort, Cancun boasts attractive beaches, luxurious hotels, excellent weather, and a central location close to Mayan ruins. Day trips to the archeological sites of Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Coba are popular with visitors, as are water sports off the gorgeous islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.
    Merida, Mexico
Being centrally located, Merida is a practical hub to explore all of the splendors of the Yucatan Peninsula. Merida depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico. The Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Montejo founded Merida in 1542 on the site of a former Mayan city he destroyed. Cut off from the rest of Mexico for many years because of the difficulty in communicating by train and highway, the Yucatecans became somewhat independent, having more contact with European and US Gulf Coast cities and life-styles. Splendid regional dishes and traditional music and dances local to this region are found in restaurants, theatres and shops housed in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard fashioned after Paris' Champs Elysée.

San Crístobal De Las Casas, the old State Capital, stands in a high mountain valley at 2110m. You will find fine examples of 16th century architecture, including a church whose engraved altar is solid silver, and a crown shaped fountain. The city enjoys a temperate climate and most visitors find that walking the old cobble-stoned streets, is the best way to discover the city’s past and present. The city’s mountain valley setting and proximity to the jungle of the Chiapas lowlands also allows various opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, where you will appreciate the natural scenery and richness of the area.
    Rancho Esmeralda, Mexico
Rancho Esmeralda is located within beautiful Ocosingo Valley, just a short walking distance from Toniná ruins. The ranch is a former cattle pasture, which has been converted to a low -key tourist attraction and macademia nut tree plantation. The spacious porches on the rustic cabañas offer great views of this quiet transition zone between the lowland jungle and highland pine forest. The area enjoys a near perfect climate and there are a number of optional excursions available if you want to do more than relax in your hanging chair. Horseback riding is available along the trails through the foothills, or you can hike if you prefer.

The Palenque Ruins are impressive indeed, particularly the Pyramid of the Inscriptions, where a large sarcophagus was found, containing the mummified remains of the Lord Pakal. The site's many temples, with fantastic comb-like decorations on their intact roofs, and the sculptured wall panels, are undoubtedly amongst the most exquisite achievements of the Maya. The surrounding jungle growth and its bird life are sure to be as fascinating as the ruins.
    Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
Imagine soft, sandy beaches lined with swaying palms only steps from the soothing clear waters of the Caribbean. You're in Playa del Carmen, and you think you're in heaven. It's lovely, tranquil and inviting. Then, step off the beach and step into the charming shops along the pedestrian walkway and take away everything from handcrafted silver jewelry to delicately embroidered clothing and all kinds of things beautifully and locally made, Not enough? Take a little day trip and visit the Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean at Tulum. Or visit the natural aquariums at Xel-ha and the nearby park at Xcaret.
